Why Spiders & Scorpions Are a Problem in the Antelope Valley

Palmdale and Lancaster's desert climate is ideal habitat for scorpions. Understanding why they're here helps us keep them out.

🌡️

Desert Climate = Scorpion Habitat

The Antelope Valley's dry, rocky terrain is exactly what scorpions prefer. Hot summers and mild winters allow populations to thrive year-round.

🌙

They Come Out at Night

Scorpions are nocturnal hunters. They're active after dark, which is when they're most likely to enter homes through gaps under doors, windows, and foundation cracks.

💧

They Follow Their Food

Scorpions eat insects, especially crickets and cockroaches. If you have other insect activity, scorpions will follow. Eliminating prey populations reduces scorpion pressure.

🏠

They Enter Through Tiny Gaps

Scorpions can flatten themselves to squeeze through gaps as thin as a credit card. Common entry points include door sweeps, pipe penetrations, and foundation cracks.

🔦

Hard to See Without UV Light

Scorpions glow under ultraviolet light, making them nearly invisible to the naked eye in normal light conditions — especially on desert soil and rock.

👶

Dangerous to Children & Pets

While most scorpion stings cause pain and swelling, they can be more severe in children, elderly adults, and small pets. Don't take chances — get treated.

Spiders & Scorpions Found in Palmdale & Lancaster

Black Widow Spider

One of the most venomous spiders in North America. Identified by the red hourglass marking on its abdomen. Very common in garages, woodpiles, and sheds throughout the Antelope Valley.

🟤

Brown Widow Spider

Related to the black widow, increasingly common throughout Southern California. Found in outdoor furniture, fences, and quiet corners around the home.

🕷️

Wolf Spider

Large, fast-moving ground hunters. Not dangerously venomous but alarming in size. Very common in garages, crawlspaces, and along foundations in Palmdale and Lancaster.

🦂

Bark Scorpion

The most venomous scorpion in North America. Found throughout the Antelope Valley — pale yellow-brown, slender, and small. Their sting can cause serious symptoms.

🏜️

Desert Hairy Scorpion

The largest scorpion in the US, up to 5 inches long. Common in our region. Its sting is less toxic but still painful — and their presence near homes is alarming.

🌐

Desert Tarantula

Common in the Antelope Valley, especially in fall when males wander looking for mates. Not typically dangerous to humans, but upsetting to find near the home.

How We Treat & Prevent Spiders and Scorpions

1

Night Inspection

We use UV light to locate scorpions on your property at night, identifying hotspots and entry points invisible during the day.

2

Perimeter Treatment

We apply targeted residual treatments around your home's foundation, entry points, and yard to eliminate scorpions and their prey insects.

3

Entry Point Exclusion

We identify and seal the gaps, cracks, and penetrations scorpions use to enter your home — door sweeps, pipe penetrations, foundation gaps.

4

Ongoing Protection

We recommend a recurring treatment schedule — especially important in the Antelope Valley where scorpion season runs nearly year-round.

Common Spider & Scorpion Questions

What should I do if I'm stung by a scorpion?

Clean the sting site with soap and water. Apply a cold compress. Most healthy adults experience pain and swelling only. Seek emergency care immediately if the victim is a child, elderly adult, or if breathing difficulty, numbness, or vision changes occur. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Why am I suddenly seeing scorpions inside?

Scorpions come inside seeking water during dry spells and warmth during cooler months. New construction nearby can also displace populations. Once they find a way in, they'll keep coming back without treatment.

Can I get rid of scorpions on my own?

DIY treatments rarely reach the level of residual protection needed. The key is eliminating prey insects, treating harborage areas, and sealing entry points — a thorough job that's difficult without professional equipment and experience.

How often do I need scorpion treatments?

We recommend quarterly treatments for most Antelope Valley homes, with additional spot treatments after finding activity. Scorpion pressure is high enough in our region that one-time treatments are often not sufficient.

Are the treatments safe for my pets?

Yes. We'll advise on any brief wait period before your pets re-enter treated areas. We use products that are effective against scorpions while being safe when applied and dried.
